Editing bliss

Editing bliss

Not editing bliss, I lied.

Editing is a pain in the ass. There I said it. It’s a necessary evil, sure, I get that… but the idea of reading through a third time stinks.  Cleaning up the dialog and polishing up the context… that’s hard. The fun part is the rapid-fire creation of the events and the world development, the idea of building something special. But then to go in and tear it all up and work through each sentence and button up or enhance sections… that’s a pain in the butt.

I’m going through my book, chapter by chapter, and trying to develop the voice and personality for my characters. It all works in my head, but when I get into the trenches and try to develop them further, I get stuck. It just doesn’t flow as easily as the initial gush of ideas. For me, the difficulty is in the strength to slash out what I had originally thought was good content. Not every sentence is gold. Some are just plain crap. Knowing when to trim and when to keep is a huge milestone I hope to hit soon. For now, I just keep pushing tin and hope it works out in the end. EVENTUALLY, I will be able to afford a real editor and put it all together correctly.
